Malmok Beach Aruba is not one big beach. It is a series of small sandy coves cut into the rocky limestone shore north of the high-rise hotels, along the road to the California Lighthouse. Behind it sits a quiet residential area of large homes. In front is some of the calmest, clearest shallow water on the island, and offshore lies Aruba’s most famous shipwreck.

It is a snorkel-and-swim stop rather than a lie-around-all-day beach. Bring what you need, because there is almost nothing there.

Where Malmok Beach Aruba is

Malmok runs along the northwest shore in Noord, north of Fisherman’s Huts (Hadicurari), and south of Boca Catalina. The main coast road heading for the lighthouse, the Tierra del Sol golf course and Arashi Beach passes right along it. From the Palm Beach hotels it’s a short drive, a bike ride or a long walk. VisitAruba lists car, taxi, bus or walking as options.

We couldn’t confirm a dedicated public lot. If you drive, park legally and don’t block driveways, since this is a residential street.

What it’s like

Snorkeling at Malmok

This is why people come. The shallow water over sand and rock holds plenty of fish close to shore, and visibility is usually very good. You’ll also see catamarans and sailboats anchored just off the coves, since Malmok is a regular daytime snorkel stop for the sailing tours.

Tips for snorkeling from shore:

The Antilla wreck

The big wreck off this coast is the Antilla, a German cargo ship. Its story is better than most shipwreck tales. Built in Hamburg in 1939, it was waiting off Aruba when Germany invaded the Netherlands on 10 May 1940. As Dutch marines approached that same day, the German crew set fires and opened the seacocks to scuttle her rather than hand her over. The crew was taken ashore and interned.

The ship is about 400 feet long and lies on its side in up to around 60 feet of water. By the 1950s storms had broken it in two. Today it is a popular dive site, with tube sponges, coral and plenty of fish growing over the hull, and parts sit shallow enough for snorkelers to see from the surface on a clear day.

Islands says decent swimmers can reach it from shore. VisitAruba, writing about nearby Boca Catalina, advises against swimming out from there because it’s too far. Our honest take: unless you’re a strong open-water swimmer with a buddy and a float, see it from a boat. There’s boat traffic, distance and wind to deal with.

The Antilla is one of the stops on our clear boat tour, which also stops at Boca Catalina and the turtle spot at Tres Trapi, with gear included.

A note on the lighthouse name

The California Lighthouse up the road is named after a different wreck, the steamship California, lost nearby in 1891, long before the Antilla. Don’t mix them up when you’re telling the story at dinner.

Best time to visit Malmok

Morning is best for calm water and fewer boats. Early morning and late afternoon are also when people bike and walk the Malmok road, and the coves face west for sunset. Midday sun is harsh with no shade, so if you’re there at noon, keep it short.

Combine it with the neighbors

Malmok sits in a chain of good water. A half-day plan that works well:

  1. Snorkel Malmok early.
  2. Drive two minutes north to Boca Catalina for a second swim.
  3. Finish at Arashi, where there are huts, a bar and a parking lot.
  4. Stay for sunset at the lighthouse.

Who Malmok suits

It’s great for snorkelers, strong swimmers and anyone who prefers a short, quiet swim to a full beach setup. It’s not great for families who need restrooms and shade, or for anyone wanting soft sand to lounge on for hours. For that, use Malmok as a stop and spend the afternoon at Arashi or Eagle Beach.

Malmok Beach FAQ

Is Malmok Beach good for families?

It works for a short swim with kids who can swim, thanks to the calm, shallow water. With no restrooms, food or shade, though, families usually do better spending the day at Arashi and stopping at Malmok on the way.

Can you fish at Malmok?

VisitAruba lists it as a popular fishing spot, and you will often see locals casting from the rocks. Give them space when you are swimming.

How deep is the Antilla?

According to Wikipedia, the wreck lies on its port side in up to about 60 feet (18 m) of water. Parts of it come much closer to the surface.

Is Malmok good for sunset?

Yes. The coves face west, and VisitAruba calls it a good place to watch the sun go down. Bring a drink and sit on the rocks.

How do I get to Malmok without a car?

VisitAruba lists the public bus as an option, along with taxis. On foot or by bike from the Palm Beach hotels is very doable early or late in the day.
