You do not need a boat to snorkel in Aruba. A handful of beaches on the calm side of the island have fish, coral and even turtles a short swim from the sand. Most of them are packed into one short stretch of the northwest coast, which means you can hit three in a morning. Here are the best snorkeling beaches Aruba has for shore entry, in the order we would try them.

The northwest: Aruba’s snorkel strip

1. Arashi Beach

The tourism board rates Arashi as a good beginner snorkel beach, and it is hard to argue. Shallow, calm water over sand, with small colorful fish close in and schools of palometas in the shallows. Head for the left side as you face the sea, which the tourism board recommends. There is a large parking area, free shade huts, a beach bar and umbrella rentals. Bring your own snorkel gear, since rental vendors can be hit or miss. Sundays are busy with local families.

2. Boca Catalina

A small bay a few minutes south, with steps down from the road. Clear water, easy sandy entry and fish right off the beach: palometas, trunkfish and sergeant majors near shore, larger fish and coral further out. Snorkel boats stop here, so mornings are calmer.

3. Catalina Cove

Enter at Boca Catalina and swim north along the rocks. Fish hide along the edges, so follow the shoreline. Look for blue tangs, bar jacks and barred hamlets.

4. Tres Trapi

Named for three steps carved into the rock, this tiny spot between Malmok and Arashi is famous for cushion sea stars on the sandy bottom about 100 feet out, and for sea turtles grazing near the seagrass. Islands magazine suggests going between 6 and 11 AM for the best chance at turtles. There is no handrail on the steps and the rocks are sharp, so wear water shoes. The water can be choppy. Never pick up a sea star.

5. Malmok Beach

A string of small coves just south of Tres Trapi. Expect sergeant majors, bluehead wrasses, banded butterflyfish and French angelfish. The entry has sharp rock and sea urchins, so go slowly. Catamarans anchor offshore for snorkel stops, which tells you the water is good.

If shore entry is not your thing, our clear boat tour covers this same coast by boat, with stops at the Antilla wreck, Boca Catalina and the turtle area at Tres Trapi, and snorkel gear included.

The south coast

6. Mangel Halto

The best reef snorkeling you can reach from shore in Aruba. Inside the mangrove-sheltered lagoon the water is calm and shallow, with parrotfish, yellowtail snapper, blue tangs and stingrays. Out at the reef edge the wall drops to about 110 feet, with gorgonians, sponges, morays and barracuda. There is also an old tugboat wreck, the Kappel, at about 12 meters, which is a dive site rather than a snorkel for most people.

Two cautions from the tourism board: the shoreline has sharp rock, and strong currents and rough seas can happen outside the lagoon, so only strong swimmers should head to the reef. Since 2019 the area has been part of the protected Parke Marino Aruba.

7. Baby Beach

A calm, shallow lagoon at the southern tip. The tourism board says the best snorkeling is near where the bay opens to the ocean. It is the easiest snorkel on the island for nervous swimmers and kids. Rentals are on site. Stay inside the marked snorkel area, because the lagoon mouth opens to rough water. Serious snorkelers may find it a little thin on fish compared with the northwest.

Tips for snorkeling from shore in Aruba

Our picks

For a first snorkel, start at Arashi. For the best fish-per-minute, go to Boca Catalina early. For turtles, try Tres Trapi at dawn. For a real reef wall, head south to Mangel Halto on a calm day. You will see why Aruba’s leeward coast has such a strong snorkeling reputation.

Quick answers

Where can I see turtles from shore?

Tres Trapi and the Malmok coves are your best bets, early in the morning. Mangel Halto also has sightings.

Do I need fins?

Not for Arashi or Baby Beach. They help a lot at Tres Trapi, Malmok and the reef edge at Mangel Halto, where you may be swimming against a little chop.

Is there anywhere to rent gear on the beach?

Baby Beach has rentals. At the northwest beaches, availability varies, so bringing your own is the safe plan.
