California Lighthouse Aruba and Alto Vista Chapel: 2026 Guide

The California Lighthouse in Aruba stands on a hill at the island’s north-west tip, and it is the easiest landmark to pair with a quiet detour inland. A short drive away along the north coast sits Alto Vista Chapel, a small yellow church on a cactus-covered rise. Together they make a good two-hour outing, ideally ending at the lighthouse for sunset.
California Lighthouse Aruba: the basics
The tower is about 30 metres tall, designed by the French architect Léon Jean Marie Bourgeois, finished in 1916 and first lit in 1918. It stands in an area called Hudishibana, above Arashi Beach and the sand dunes. It is named after the British steamship California, which sank just off this coast on 23 September 1891. The wreck is one reason a light was built here at all.
The old keeper’s house next door is now an Italian restaurant, La Trattoria el Faro Blanco. It has one of the best dinner views on the island.
Can you climb it?
Yes, at the time of writing. Aruba’s tourism board lists the lighthouse as open to climb every day from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm, with a $5 entry fee and no reservation needed. Inside, a spiral staircase of about 123 steps takes you to the top. Some older guidebooks say the tower is closed, because it was for years, so check on the day if you are making a special trip.
When to go
Sunset. The hill looks straight out over the Caribbean, and on a clear evening you might catch the green flash as the sun drops. It does get crowded with tour vans in late afternoon, so if you want photos without people, go in the morning when the light is softer on the tower itself.
On the hill
Shade is limited on the hilltop, and the wind is strong, so hold on to hats. Arashi Beach, Malmok and Boca Catalina are all a few minutes’ drive away, which makes it easy to combine with a swim.
Around the lighthouse
The hill is part of a wider area worth a slow look. Below the hill are pale sand dunes among the scrub. Down below is Arashi Beach, one of the island’s best easy swims. A short drive away you also have Malmok and Boca Catalina, and the restaurants at Tierra del Sol. The tower itself was restored in 2016, for its centenary.
Alto Vista Chapel
Alto Vista is often called Aruba’s first chapel. A missionary from Venezuela, Domingo Antonio Silvestre, built the original around 1750 with local Caquetio people and Spanish settlers. It was later abandoned and rebuilt on the same site in 1952. The current building is small, bright yellow and simple inside, with stone benches outside for when services overflow.
The road up is lined with white crosses marking the Stations of the Cross. Locals walk to the chapel from Oranjestad on Good Friday, and there is an annual feast for Santa Filomena in January. It is still a working place of worship, so dress modestly and keep your voice down if a service is on.
Getting there
From the lighthouse you can follow the dirt road along the north coast. The track is unpaved, dusty and winding, so take it slowly. From Noord there is a more direct road inland.
Inside the chapel
Frommer’s points out an old Spanish cross inside, which it calls one of the oldest European artworks in the Dutch Caribbean. Outside, a white cross stands in front of the entrance, and visitors often leave small offerings, ribbons or pebbles, as prayers. The graves of Domingo Antonio Silvestre and Miguel Enrique Albarez are close to the chapel. The view north over the empty coast is the other reason to come.
A simple route
| Stop | Time to spend | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Alto Vista Chapel | 20 to 30 minutes | Quiet, best in the morning or late afternoon |
| North coast dirt road | 15 to 20 minutes | Rough waves, cactus, wind. Not a swimming coast |
| California Lighthouse | 30 to 60 minutes | Climb before 7:00 pm, then stay for sunset |
| Dinner at the trattoria, or Arashi Beach | As long as you like | Book ahead for a sunset table |
Getting there from the hotels
The lighthouse is at the end of the road that runs north past the high-rise hotels and Malmok. Frommer’s puts it about five minutes’ drive north of Santa Ana Church in Noord. Alto Vista lies roughly 8 km from the lighthouse. Taxis can drop you at the lighthouse, but for the chapel and the dirt road you really want your own car, a bike tour or a jeep tour. With a 30-metre tower and a light that sits about 55 metres above the sea, the lighthouse is also easy to spot from almost anywhere on the north-west of the island, so it is hard to get lost.
Photo tips
- Lighthouse: walk a little down the slope toward the dunes for a shot of the tower against the sea.
- Chapel: the yellow walls glow in early morning and late afternoon light. Midday is flat and harsh.
- Sunset: from the lighthouse hill, the sun drops into open water. Wait ten minutes after it disappears for the best colour.
Tips
- Bring water. There is little shade at either stop.
- Watch the wind on the tower. It is gusty at the top.
- Respect the chapel. It is a place of prayer first and a photo stop second.
- Combine with the water. The coast below the lighthouse is where the Antilla wreck and Boca Catalina are. A morning clear boat tour followed by an afternoon here covers the whole north-west tip in a day.
